Ernie Bootsma represents start-up and growth stage businesses, as well as more mature companies in the areas of intellectual property (copyright, trademark, trade secret) media, licensing and entertainment law. His practice encompasses the formation, financing, corporate governance, IP due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, intellectual property, and transactional fields. He has negotiated and closed complex merger and acquisition transactions, planned and counseled clients with regard to intellectual property protection and maintenance, provided internet/e-commerce, domain name, website, entertainment, media and advertising counseling and copyright advice, structured and implemented licensing and distribution arrangements, and handled debt and equity financing transactions for clients in a wide variety of industries. Ernie also counsels physicians and physician practice groups in a wide variety of business structural issues in response to state and federal legislation.
Ernie has been involved with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network for more than 12 years, having served as the Chair of Angel Oregon 2013, Chair of the Pubtalk Committee, and served as a member of the Membership Committee. Ernie is also a member of the Board of Directors of the Oregon Technology Business Center. He is a frequent speaker on corporate and intellectual property issues for startups.
Prior to joining Ater Wynne in 2004, Ernie helped found the Portland, Oregon office of White & Lee LLP (now White/Summers LLP), where he managed the intellectual property and trademark registration practice. He also acted as general counsel to a number of emerging growth start-ups and venture funds through successive rounds of financing.
